It's a big week for Bob Boilen! He celebrated his birthday earlier in the week and his first book, Your Song Changed My Life, comes out today. He celebrated on the show today with some wonderful pop music by the band Free Cake For Every Creature and a beautiful Grateful Dead cover courtesy of the National. While Bob leaves the studio to celebrate, Robin plays a joyous cut from the Nobility and an atmospheric track from the supergroup Minor Victories.

Also on the show: NPR Music's Lars Gotrich drops by to play some rich guitar music from William Tyler, Bob plays guitar-meets-sitar duo Dawg Yawp and Robin closes out the show with some jolting rock from Yak.

Day Of The Dead is the second album members of The National have compiled for the benefit of AIDS-relief group the Red Hot Organization. The band's Aaron and Bryce Dessner gathered over 60 other artists to contribute Grateful Dead covers to the 59-track album. Here, The National tackles "Morning Dew," a hauntingly beautiful song about what happens when a couple wakes up to a post-apocalyptic world.

Day of the Dead is out May 20 on 4AD.

Dawg Yawp

  • Song: East Virginia Blues
  • from East Virginia Blues - Single

On paper, the idea of a sitar-guitar Appalachian folk duo may seem puzzling, but in the hands of Dawg Yawp, it works. Tyler Randall, the sitar player, first heard the multi-string instrument on The Beatles' "Within You Without You," and after finally getting one found a way to insert it perfectly into this traditional folk tune.
