What Is Google Telling Us With That Bar Code?

Today is the 57th anniversary of the bar code patent. Omar Gallaga wrote an ode to the marvelous lasers a while back. But in honor of the bar code, Google is featuring those familiar black and white bars on its homepage. But what does it mean? What are they trying to tell us?

I did what any smartphone-toting individual would: I pointed my iPhone and scanned the code using pic2shop. Unfortunately it came back empty. So I ran it through an online bar code reader, and it very quickly deciphered that in Code_128 that series of black lines meant: Google.
