Hours before Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber worked the stage at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards last night, Austin's Latin funksters Grupo Fantasma won the Grammy for Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album for their album El Existencial.

The competition was pretty tough this year in that catch-all category: the other nominees were ChocQuibTown, Draco Rosa, Nortec presents Bostich and Fussible and Ana Tijoux.

It was the second time the band sat in the audience waiting for the winner to be announced. They were also nominated in 2008 for their album Sonido Gold.

Felicidades to Grupo Fantasma!!

By the way, you'd never know there was even a Latin Alternative category based on media coverage: when I Googled "Fantasma" and "The Grammys" just hours after the telecast, the only coverage I found was an Associated Press story from the online version of the Taiwan News.

Grupo Fantasma Se Lleva El Grammy
