Soprano Natalie Dessay -- with the blood to prove it -- as the unhinged Lucia di Lammermoor.

Since this series of weekly posts is titled "Confessions of an Operaholic," I have no qualms about admitting that I love to play guessing games with opera singers. The obsession started long ago with the Saturday Met Opera broadcasts. Remember those name-the-singer quizes at intermission?

So now, dear friends, I will inflict my little passion on you.

I'm sure you had it marked on your calendar: last Saturday was the 175th anniversary of the premiere of Donizetti's classic blood and hysteria warhorse, Lucia di Lammermoor. So, to mark the occasion, here's the first annual "Lucia Challenge."

This version of Lucia's "mad scene" has been sliced and diced, using performances by six different sopranos. Your job is to match the different Lucias to their recordings. You can hear the audio all the way through, and/or listen to the clips and drag the audio clip to the correct singer's image. Extra points if you can name the "secret seventh" soprano who hits the final stratospheric note in the complete version below. This is a mad scene that may drive you, well, mad. Good luck!
