Warren Buffett and Bill Gates' quest to get the nation's richest people to donate big bucks to charity is off to a pretty good start.

The duo announced Wednesday that 40 people had signed onto the Giving Pledge, a commitment to give away more than half their wealth. Buffett and Gates announced the initiative in June.

Among those who committed to the pledge are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; media mogul Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg; energy investor T. Boone Pickens; and banker David Rockefeller.

The pledge allows participants to give their money to a cause of their choice. Movie director George Lucas said he would focus on education.

Let's hope they all live up to those pledges.
