At Last! Your John Lennon/David Lee Roth Dream Collaboration Has Arrived

It's easy to get jaded about mashups, especially when their highest-profile pop-culture berth at the moment comes courtesy of The X Factor and its blind insistence on splicing unrelated songs together for no other reason beyond "just because." So it's nice to be reminded of one conceived of genuine inspiration, rather than thoughtless song-stapling.

Enter "Imagine A Jump," courtesy of John Lennon, Van Halen and a fellow who (perhaps) goes by the handle of Mighty Mike. Like all great mashups (and more than a few great songs), it grabs your attention with its brazenness and then, when you think you've got it pegged as little more than a clever joke, reveals an unexpected depth. In this case, note how David Lee Roth's lyrics gain resonance when placed against Lennon's soft, utopian piano chords.

So sit back on this Friday and enjoy some Frankensteinery that works stunningly well for absolutely no reason.
