Meet New NPR Board Chair and Vice Chair, and NPR Foundation Board Chair

NPR Board members are among the unsung heroes of our community. The Board of Directors for NPR Inc. provides guidance to the NPR President/CEO and strategic direction for the organization. It sounds glamorous – but it's a big responsibility that takes a lot of time and energy and demands careful deliberation.

At last week's Board of Directors meeting, Howard Stevenson, who served as Chair since March of 2008, was thanked for his distinguished leadership and service, having successfully steered NPR through a challenging economic climate, the purchase of a new building, and leadership changes. Howard will remain on the Board for another year.

Dave Edwards, Director/General Manager of WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio, was elected to the role of NPR Board Chair, and Carol Cartwright, President of Bowling Green State University, to the role of Vice Chair. Both votes were unanimous. Congratulations, Dave and Carol!

In a release announcing his new role, Dave notes that the NPR Board's agenda includes, "positioning all of public radio for the ever changing media environment." No small order, given the pace of change in media today.

Also, last week, we applauded the selection of Antoine van Agtmael, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer, Emerging Markets Management, LLP, for a second term as Chair of the NPR Foundation's Board of Trustees. The NPR Foundation Trustees manage the assets of the NPR Foundation, which was established to enhance current and long-term financial support for NPR. The NPR Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) organization from NPR, Inc. In his role as Chair of the Board of Trustees, Antoine also has a seat on the NPR Inc. Board.

All of these individuals have unparalleled passion for public radio – and a commitment to the public service mission of both NPR and NPR Member stations. We thank them for their service to NPR.
