Think back to the 2000 Democratic convention in Los Angeles, the one that nominated Vice President Al Gore for president.

Forever, as we learn today, does not necessarily mean forever.
Several media outlets are reporting that after 40 years of marriage, Al and Tipper Gore are calling it quits. According to Politico, the couple sent out an e-mail to their friends, saying, "We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate":
"This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further."
The account in Politico says the news has been confirmed by Kalee Kreider, a Gore spokesperson.
The Gores have four children and live in Tennessee, though both grew up in the D.C. area; Al Gore is the son of the late Albert Gore Sr., a longtime Tennessee congressman and senator. He and Tipper were married at the National Cathedral on May 19, 1970.

Inconvenient Purchase: This May 13 piece from the Los Angeles Times notes that Al and Tipper have just purchased a house in secluded Montecito, in southern California:
The couple spent $8,875,000 on a gated ocean-view villa on 1 1/2 acres with a swimming pool, spa and fountains, according to real estate sources familiar with the deal. The Italian-style house has high ceilings with beams in the public rooms, a family room, a wine cellar, terraces, six fireplaces, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms in more than 6,500 square feet of living space.
Montecito has long been a haven for Southern California's rich and famous, a spot where celebrity faces can blend into the crowd. Among the community's notable residents have been talk show giant Oprah Winfrey, actors Michael Douglas and Christopher Lloyd, and golfer Fred Couples. The 93108 ZIP Code, which includes the coastal hamlet, was ranked as America's seventh most expensive area last year by Forbes.
