Funeral Arrangements for Sen. Byrd

The office of the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) has released a schedule for the memorial service that begins on Thursday, July 1.  He will be laid to rest on Tuesday, July 6 in Arlington, Va.

At 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, the hearse carrying Sen. Byrd's body will arrive at the Senate steps of the Capitol.

At 9:50 the casket will be brought up the steps into the Senate chamber, where it will be placed upon the catafalque that was first used for President Lincoln's funeral in 1865.

From 10:15 until 3:45 p.m., the Senate chamber's public galleries will be open to all who wish to pay their respects.

At 4 p.m. the casket will be removed and taken outside to a waiting hearse, to depart from Andrews AFB.  Arrival time in Charleston, W.Va., is 5:50 p.m., where a procession will take place from the Robert C. Byrd U.S. Courthouse to the state Capitol, where the casket will be moved to the Capitol Rotunda.

From 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. the following morning, there will be a public viewing in the rotunda.

A memorial service will begin at 11:30 a.m.  The casket will be removed at 4 p.m.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, at the Memorial Baptist Church in Arlington, Va.  It is open to the public.
