The Value Of The Plea Bargain
In an ideal world, anyone charged with a crime in this country will eventually have his or her day in court. But the reality is far different. Most criminal convictions are the result of plea bargaining — behind-the-scenes negotiations between prosecutors and defense attorneys. Critics argue that criminal defendants can get off too lightly, while defendants say they're often pressured into accepting a deal that may or may not be to their advantage. Is plea bargaining a necessity in today's overcrowded justice system, or an easy cop-out?
