For most sports fans, Sunday's Super Bowl represents an end –- the midwinter conclusion of a season that began in training camps in the almost forgotten heat of late July.

But fans of the summer game know that football's finish clears the decks for the return of the "Grapefruit" and "Cactus" leagues as major league rosters gather on fields in Florida and Arizona. So, the other day, after a friend reminded me that this year, it all starts on February 14th, I gave in to that occasional impulse to doggerel.

A sure sign that birds are headed back North
A nod to all nerds and statistical sorts
A command that sends scribes to sunny resorts
Pitchers and catchers report
