This past May, I broke down and joined the millions of people with an iPhone. I knew it was a good phone and that the number of applications would blow me away, but I really had no idea how many apps were out there.

As a new kid to the app world, I downloaded the apps that I thought were the essentials — Twitter, Facebook, Pandora and yes, Starbucks. But I realized there was so much more.

There are apps out there that will measure your sleep cycles like Smart Alarm (which wakes me up every morning) or apps that help you figure out where to eat when you want to try something new like UrbanSpoon.

I was also very impressed with how many commercial companies had smartphone apps available — everything from the Weather Channel to Google Search to the The New York Times can be downloaded. And of course, NPR has a nifty little app that will air all the shows and let you listen to NPR no matter where you are.

It turns out that when Apple said "there's an app for that" they weren't lying. There's truly an application for everything.
