Senator Nelson Introduces Legislation Limiting Abortion Coverage

Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) introduced legislation today that would stop women from obtaining abortions under some health care plans. NPR's Andrea Seabrook says women who buy health insurance with the help of the government would not be able to purchase a plan that includes abortion.

When the original legislation was introduced in the House by Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI), it generated controversy and a study that suggested it could make it difficult for many women to obtain the procedure. NPR's Julie Rovner examined the matter last month on Weekend Edition, Saturday:
