The "sliver of hope" that remains for four coal miners still unaccounted for after Monday's disastrous explosion in Montcoal, W.Va., is that they found shelter in one chamber deep within the Upper Big Branch mine, West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin told reporters a short time ago.

It is "the only chamber that (was not) checked," before searchers had to pull out of the mine because of dangerous gases in the air, Manchin said. Families of the miners know, "that's the sliver of hope that we have and they know that the odds are not in our favor" of finding the men alive:

There should be food and portable air devices in that chamber, NPR's Brian Naylor reports from West Virginia.

At least 25 miners were killed by the explosion. Two others are recovering from injuries. One hole has been drilled and two more are being worked on to draw toxic gases out of the mine so that rescuers can get back in.
