The European Union police agency Europol said today that it had busted the "world's largest pedophile ring." In its press release, the agency said it has arrested 184 suspects, rescued 230 child victims and identified 670 suspects in more than 30 countries.
The AP reports:
Europol director Rob Wainwright said Wednesday the ring was based around an online forum and was "probably the largest online pedophile network in the world."
Police say the forum called boylover.net, based in Amsterdam, had up to 70,000 members.
Radio Netherlands Worldwide reports that one of the big breaks in the three-year investigation came after the arrest of Amir I, the man who ran boylover.net from his home in Holland. With his cooperation, police were able to trace 71,000 IP addresses from his computer.
Police said the forum wasn't used to trade child pornography. Instead, Radio Netherlands reports, "members used the forum to facilitate individual exchanges of photos or videos online."
