John Doe has been a founding member of the L.A. punk band X, a solo artist, an actor, a member of the folk-rock band The Knitters, and now the author of a new memoir about the early days of L.A. punk, titled Under The Big Black Sun. Doe also has a new album out, titled The Westerner, on which he performs a song with his former wife and fellow X founder, Exene Cervenka.

The title The Westerner refers to Doe's late friend Michael Blake, an author best known for Dances With Wolves; Doe visited Blake when the latter was suffering from Alzheimer's. The album was recorded in Tucson with Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, as well as band members like guitarist Jesse Dayton and original X drummer DJ Bonebrake.

Here, Doe and his band perform songs from The Westerner for World Cafe.
