The headquarters for University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield dominate the Pittsburgh skyline much as they organizations have dominated health care in the region for decades.
Residents fear that the economy of Belhaven, N.C., will collapse because its hospital closed. "How many people go retire somewhere where it doesn't even have a hospital?" asks the mayor.
"We can't continue to have unsafe medical care be a regular part of the way we do business in health care," said Harvard School of Public Health's Dr. Ashish Jha at a Senate hearing Thursday.
Keeping patient records electronically, instead of on paper, didn't change how much hospitals charged per procedure, a study shows. But critics say billing errors can be more subtle.
