Paul Applewhite of Applewhite Aero isn't allowed to fly this 3-pound Styrofoam plane. That's because he has added circuitry to make it autonomous — it can find its way to specified coordinates — which means it's an unmanned aerial vehicle requiring a special testing permit.

April 30, 2013 Tough federal aviation rules and public backlash against drones have raised worries that the U.S. unmanned aerial vehicle industry will be left behind foreign competitors. Developers say the U.S. light drone industry is being overtaken by manufacturers in Israel and Australia.

President Could, In Theory, Order Drone Strike Inside U.S., Holder Says

An unmanned drone patrols the U.S.-Canadian border. Attorney General Eric Holder, in a letter to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said the president could in an "extraordinary circumstance" order a drone strike inside the country.

March 5, 2013 In a letter to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., the attorney general noted that such a situation could be imagined only in an "extraordinary circumstance" such as the attack on Pearl Harbor or on Sept. 11, 2001. The letter was in response to inquiries from Paul regarding the legality of military strikes within the country.

John Brennan, President Obama's nominee to be the next CIA director, worked closely with Saudi Arabia to set up a secret U.S. drone base there, The New York Times reported. Brennan's confirmation hearing is Thursday.

September 25, 2012 Law and national security experts got together last weekend for a dogfight they call the Drone Smackdown. The contest, though tongue in cheek, still raised lots of questions about the proliferation of drones, the rules of combat and federal efforts to regulate them.

August 30, 2012 For the third time in a month, Apple has rejected a proposed app that tracks American drone strikes. The company says the app is "objectionable and crude"; the developer says he wants to encourage more dialogue about drone attacks.
