Send Your Haiku To Mars! NASA Seeks Poets

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope took this close-up of the red planet Mars in 2007, when it was just 55 million miles away.

May 2, 2013 NASA is looking for three haiku to include on a DVD that will travel to Mars aboard a spacecraft this fall. And everyone who submits a poem will have their name included.

Mars Rovers Go Quiet, As Sun Blocks Transmissions

The rover Curiosity and other NASA spacecraft at Mars are now in a radio blackout, as the sun is interfering with transmissions. Curiosity took this self-portrait by combining 66 exposures in February.

April 14, 2013 Communications between the Earth and Mars are going on a month-long hiatus, thanks to interference from the sun. That means NASA's spacecraft on Mars will be on their own until NASA's radio signals can reach them again.

Second Genesis: Looking For Aliens Here, There And Everywhere

Will we need to tread lightly, in deference to the locals, when finally do make it to Mars?

April 9, 2013 Did the seeds of life on Earth begin on Mars? Are we part of Earth's first alien invasion? Adam Frank says we may be looking at a future full of discoveries in our own solar system that could reset our understanding of life and its origin.

The Siren Call Of The Wilderness Can Be Heard On Mars, Too

Coprates Chasma in the Valles Marineris on Mars, photographed by the Mars Express spacecraft. Appearing in the top half of this image, it ranges from 60-100 km wide and drops 8-9 km below the surrounding plains.

March 26, 2013 The wilderness is not just a thing, it's a need. It's an idea that has grown up with humans and it will follow us from this planet to the next, and beyond. Commentator Adam Frank plots our future course.

Streams Of Water Once Flowed On Mars; NASA Says Photos Prove It

NASA says it has found proof that water shaped the rocks on the left, in a photograph taken by the Mars rover Curiosity (left). For comparison, the agency released an image of rocks from the Earth (right).

September 27, 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover has found definitive proof that water once ran across the surface of Mars, the agency announced today. NASA scientists say that new photos from the rover show rocks that were smoothed and rounded by water. The rocks are in a large canyon and nearby channels that were cut by flowing water, making up an alluvial fan.

Curiosity And The Search For Life On Mars

An artist's rendering shows a rocket-powered descent stage lowering the one-ton Curiosity rover to the Mars surface.

August 15, 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover will soon begin to search for signs of life, past or present, on the red planet. But can we make sense of life in strange places? And if we don't find it, what will it mean to us?

'Curiosity' Signals From Mars That We Can Solve Our Problems On Earth

This artist concept shows NASA's Curiosity rover as it will look once it starts investigating the Martian surface for the ability to sustain microbial life — past or present.

August 7, 2012 The Curiosity rover on Mars shows that, perhaps, we are ready to solve our problems. It shows us that we can face impossible challenges and find real, lasting solutions.

Mars Rover Opportunity Emerges From Winter Doldrums, Gets Back On Move

A mosaic of images taken in January 2012 shows Opportunity's vista north (left) and northeast (right), in an outcrop known as "Greeley Haven," where the rover spent its fifth Martian winter. The image released by NASA is presented in "false color," to make differences in the landscape easier to see.

May 10, 2012 With the darkest days of the Martian winter now over, NASA took its Opportunity Mars Rover for a drive this week. The rover had been stationary while its solar panels lacked enough sunlight to power its batteries.

Why Astronauts Crave Tabasco Sauce

Astronauts may have a particular affinity for Tabasco sauce in space because their sense of smell and taste is distorted.

February 23, 2012 Why do astronauts lose their sense of smell in space, and what's this got to do with their preference for fiery condiments? No one is sure, but NASA food scientists have some plausible ideas.
