Amid Change In Libya, Africa Assesses Ties

September 4, 2011 Moammar Gadhafi championed the vision of a United States of Africa. As Libya is on the cusp of what appears to be the post-Gadhafi era, the African Union has not officially recognized the rebel leadership and has expressed concern over the plight of black Africans mistaken for Gadhafi's fighters in Libya.

Americans Emerge After Months In Libyan Prisons

Matthew VanDyke, a freelance journalist from Baltimore, was held in solitary confinement in Libya for five months before he was freed last week. At left, VanDyke is seen in February, before he went to Libya; at right, after his release.

September 1, 2011 Several Americans were among the thousands of prisoners being held in Moammar Gadhafi's prisons. His downfall led to their release — though some have decided to stay in Tripoli for now.

In Tripoli, Celebrating More Than Ramadan's End

Libyan Rebels Set Deadline For Surrender

Libya's Ex-Prisoners Finding Their Way Home

Some disappeared during Libya's revolution, but some have been missing for more than 10 years. Now, thousands released from Libya's prisons are being reunited with their families.

August 29, 2011 Those held in Libya's most notorious prisons, including political prisoners, have been freed. Some have been tearfully reunited with friends and family members. But others have not yet been heard from.

Libyans removed items from a clothes shop Friday after an intense battle in the Abu Salim district of  Tripoli. Hundreds of miles to the east, loyalist troops battled rebels advancing toward the city of Sirte.
