Doctors Confirm Black Lung In Victims Of Mine Blast

A memorial at the entrance to Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch coal mine represents the 29 coal miners who were killed in an explosion in 2010.

May 17, 2013 A study of mine blast victims finds further evidence that there's a resurgence of black lung among coal miners. The relatively young ages of some of the miners and their limited tenure underground suggests significant exposure to coal dust.

Coal Mine Company Denies Responsibility Despite Disaster Settlement

Wreaths and flowers commemorating those killed in the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse are posted at the mine entrance on Dec. 10, 2007, outside Huntington, Utah. A settlement Thursday includes mine owner Murray Energy's acceptance of four violations considered "contributory" to two fatal August 2007 mine collapses at Crandall Canyon.

September 27, 2012 The Labor Department says a Thursday settlement in the 2007 Crandall Canyon mine disaster clearly leaves mine owner Murray Energy with "acknowledged responsibility for the failures that led to the tragedy." The settlement must still be approved by an administrative law judge.
