Did Food Safety Auditors Cause The Fatal Outbreak From Tainted Cantaloupes?

Melons were left to rot in the field at Jensen Farms after it was identified as the source of a fatal listeria outbreak.

January 11, 2012 Food producers rely on private auditors, not the FDA, to make sure they are following food safety rules. But the auditor of the Colorado melon farm that was the source of last year's fatal outbreak not only gave the farm a rave review, he also recommended changes that may have caused the problems.

A label consumers might find on the cantaloupes.

September 28, 2011 It's already the deadliest such outbreak in the U.S. since 1998. Seventy-two cases have been reported in 18 states so far and the death toll is expected to rise. Listeria is more dangerous than other pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli.
