A Change in NPR Pronunciation for Padilla

January 5, 2007 Occasionally, NPR changes the way we pronounce the name of someone in the news. In the case of alleged terrorist Jose Padilla, NPR had been pronouncing it puh-DILL-uh, and has changed to puh-DEE-yuh.

You say Hez-BOH-lah, I say…

July 26, 2006 Over the last couple of weeks, I've heard people on NPR saying the name of that guerrilla group a lot of different ways. Is it HEZ -boh-lah or HIZ-boh-lah? Hez-boh-LAH or hez-BOH-lah? I asked NPR reference librarian and pronunciation maven Kee Malesky about it. Here's what she said:
