Clinics Come To The Rescue Of Ethiopia's Overworked Donkeys

A donkey bitten by a hyena is checked by a veterinarian as the owner calms the animal at The Donkey Sanctuary, a clinic near Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, in 2005.

January 10, 2013 In Ethiopia, there's a saying in rural areas: "A man without a donkey is a donkey." Donkeys are both a livelihood and a lifesaver for farmers, and when they fall sick, there are special donkey hospitals to treat them.

All Aboard South Africa's High-Speed Train

Passengers wait to board the Gautrain, Africa's first high-speed train, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Aug. 2, 2011. The train travels at speeds of up to 100 mph and makes commuting much easier for South Africans accustomed to congested roads and traffic jams.

November 6, 2012 South Africa's Gautrain — the continent's first rapid rail system — links Pretoria and Johannesburg. It provides a swift, comfortable and safe ride for up to 40,000 passengers a day — in a country with notoriously nightmarish public transit.

Sheep Thrills: Senegal's 'Idol'-Style Pageant For Rams

October 24, 2012 The country's love of sheep had the perfect ingredients for an American Idol-style reality show. Khar Bii ("This Sheep") began as a joke but has blossomed into a success story and a television show that is now in its fourth season, with loyal, record audiences nationwide.

Despite Critics, Gambia Plans Dozens Of Executions

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh says all 47 death-row inmates will be executed by mid-September. Nine were killed this week by firing squad. Gambia's human rights record has frequently come under criticism during the 18 years of rule by Jammeh, shown here attending the African Union summit last month in Ethiopia.

August 29, 2012 International criticism is building over plans by Gambia's president to execute all prisoners on death row by mid-September. Nine were recently put to death by firing squad, and 38 more remain on death row.
