Performance Today
The Shostakovich centennial this year comes with a couple surprises, including Deutsche Grammophon's new release of two lesser-known works. One is a lively composition based on one of Alexander Pushkin's farcical fairy tales. The Russian Philharmonic performs "Bell-ringer's Dance" and "Carousel II," two movements from Shostakovich's comical work "The Tale of the Priest and his worker, Balda." Thomas Sanderling conducts.
