Heifetz Reissued

In October, Deutsche Grammophon re-released more than 40 original recordings made by Jascha Heifetz during the mid-1940s. The styles of these recordings range from classical to jazz. This hour begins with two tracks from that release: Clarence White's "Levee Dance" and Gershwin's Prelude No. 3.

A composer more American than apple pie? Must be George Gershwin. Here are two of his greatest hits: "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Embraceable You." Pianist Kirill Gerstein performs with the Oregon Symphony and conductor Carlos Kalmar at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland.

The U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra joins PT host Fred Child this hour to talk about its duties, playing 200 concerts a year at the White House. The orchestra will play American movie music by Elmer Bernstein: the suite he wrote for the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird.
