Day to Day, October 31, 2003 · Emily Yoffe, the intrepid Human Guinea Pig correspondent for Slate, takes on jobs or tasks that many people are curious about, but are just as glad to let someone else do.

In recent months she's tried her hand at being a telephone psychic, and she's also immersed herself into the arcane and frightfully boring world of metal detecting.

This time, Yoffe learns what it takes to be a successful street performer. She took up residence on a Washington, D.C., street corner, armed with just a tambourine and a pair of maracas.
