Talk of the Nation, November 5, 2003 · Austrialian director Peter Weir is known for varied fare, including Dead Poets Society, Witness and The Truman Show. His latest film is an adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's seafaring novel Master and Commander. O'Brian penned 20 of the historical adventures with two characters, Captain Jack Aubrey and ship's surgeon and naturalist Stephen Maturin, at the center of each.

The movie, set during the Napoleonic Wars, stars Russell Crowe as Aubrey, who pilots the HMS Surprise in pursuit of a privateer from Brazil to the Galapagos Islands. Weir filmed on location in the Galapagos.
