Oscar-Winner Takes Another Star Turn in 'House of Sand and Fog'

Day to Day, December 19, 2003 · Academy Award-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley's versatility is legendary. He won an Oscar for his 1982 lead performance in Gandhi, evocatively playing the legendary spiritual leader of the non-violence movement. And in 2000, critics lauded his feral, menacing portrayal of a British hoodlum in Sexy Beast.
In his latest film, House of Sand and Fog, Kingsley is again garnering critical raves for his portrayal of an Iranian immigrant who buys a house to begin a new life for his family in America. But the house was wrongly seized and sold from the young woman who owns it, and the film follows the harrowing struggle over the property.
Kingsley recently visited NPR West in Los Angeles, Calif., to talk with NPR's Karen Grigsby Bates about his latest role, the Oscar buzz surrounding the film and upcoming projects.
