Book Chronicles Life on Black America's 'Main Street'

The Tavis Smiley Show, January 19, 2004 · There are some 650 streets in the United States bearing the name Martin Luther King -- and more are added every year.
From King Drive in Chicago to MLK Way in Oakland, Calif., the streets and boulevards named after the famed Civil Rights leader are considered by many in the African-American community as black America's "Main Street."
Award-winning journalist Jonathan Tilove has spent two years walking King streets from the East Coast to the West Coast. Teaming up with acclaimed freelance photographer Michael Falco, Tilove chronicles the intricacies of black American culture in the photo-essay Along Martin Luther King: Travels on Black America's Main Street.
NPR's Tavis Smiley travels with the author to walk down some of those streets, and they discuss the legacy of King's vision on the national holiday honoring the slain leader.
