January 30, 2009 - Songwriter Julia Douglass left Minnesota to earn a Master's degree in music at Yale. Upon receiving her degree, however, she gave up her French horn and moved to a Salvation Army women's residence in New York City, where she began to write songs about the characters and situations that surrounded and inspired her.

During her Mountain Stage performance, Douglass plays "Poor People On TV," the title track from her most recent album, inspired by Jerry Springer and Cops. Later in the performance, she entertains the audience with the tale of her ill-fated attempt to start wearing makeup and explains her signature song, "My Boyfriend Is a Genius," which appears on her first album, Fetish for the Underdog.
