Comedian Demetri Martin tells Terry Gross he was a "straight up nerd" with an affiliation for puzzle books when he was growing up.

But eventually the nerdy morphed into funny, and now Martin is a correspondent on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. His new show on Comedy Central, Important Things With Demetri Martin, premieres Feb. 11.

This interview was originally broadcast on Sept. 24, 2007.
