Originally from Wheeling, W.Va., multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Tim O'Brien performs on Mountain Stage for the 25th time, the most for any performer.

O'Brien came to prominence as a member of the bluegrass band Hot Rize in the 1980s before developing his solo career as a performer, songwriter and producer. He's released 13 records under his own name (winning a 2006 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album with Fiddler's Green), and three with his sister Mollie O'Brien. Never had he recorded an entire record completely solo until 2008's Chameleon. O'Brien kept the instrumental backing simple on the record, much as he does here on Mountain Stage, accompanying himself on mandolin, banjo and guitar.
