NPR's Michael Sullivan reports from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border that an Italian army colonel serving with the United Nations in Afghanistan has died after being shot in apparent retaliation for U.S. airstrikes. The U.N. and Red Cross are evacuating workers as a precaution. And in neighboring Pakistan, authorities are tightening security as a precaution against other retaliatory attacks.
