Rhode Island Battles High Unemployment

The smallest state in the union places high in another state ranking — unemployment.

For more than half a year, Rhode Island has competed with Michigan for the highest jobless rate in the country.

Economists agree the state needs to create an economy based on knowledge, not manufacturing, in order to flourish. Rhode Island is looking to its major universities to help grow businesses in biotechnology and the creative industries.
