Cahokia Mounds are just east of St. Louis and stand on what was once the largest prehistoric city north of central Mexico. Monks Mound is the largest remaining earthen mound.
But one standing on Monks Mound can also see a far more modern mound — the Milam landfill. Its owner now wants to expand, and hopes to put a landfill just 2,100 feet from the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site border.
