Rival Accuses E-Harmony of Rejecting Suitors

Online dating continues to be a popular way to meet folks, and it's a big moneymaker. The biggest sites include Match.com, e-Harmony, and chemistry.com. Chemistry.com is attacking e-Harmony in advertisements, claiming e-Harmony rejects applicants too often.

SEABROOK: ...snort when I laughed? Was it the plaid slacks?

Well, there's a new kind of rejection in the dating game if you believe the advertisements for the online dating service, chemistry.com.

(Soundbite of commercial)

Unidentified Man: Nope. Still gay.

(Soundbite of banging sound)

Unidentified Woman #1: Who knows why eHarmony had rejected over a million people looking for love.

SEABROOK: The rival dating service claims eHarmony is rejecting people for all kinds of reasons like being gay, or not happy enough, or giving inconsistent answers on its 258-question membership application.

Unidentified Woman #2: So, eHarmony gave me my free compatibility thingy and like 10,000 questions later wouldn't let me join. Can't a girl get some love?

(Soundbite of banging sound)

SEABROOK: Chemistry.com's ad campaign targets people who might not want to risk one more rejection. But the ads are also making eHarmony down right angry. It says the ads are a smear and it's asking NBC to pull them, or at least qualify them. See, one of the biggest reasons eHarmony says it rejects people is because they're married and say so on their application.

So much for rejection.
