NPR's Anne Garrels reports on plans to build pipelines to carry crude oil out of Azerbaijan. Western countries, including the U.S., want the former Russian state as a trading partner. The most direct route for a pipeline would go south, through Iran. But that plan would have to wait for improved relations between the Washington and Tehran. A pipeline through Turkey is another option, but it would be the longest and most expensive route.
