With an ear for piano melodies, addictive bass lines, and light percussion, the Austin, TX five-piece group Loxsly represents a hearkening back to a more traditional alternative rock sound a la bands like Robbers On High Street or Summerbirds in the Cellar, but their third LP, Tomorrow's Fossils is not without surprises.

Instead of relying on a couple of offbeat songs to demonstrate a more experimental bent, Loxsly often blends familiarity and new ground within the same song, making for a more intriguing concept. In "You & I Were Working," for instance, Cody Ground takes a break from his responsibility as lead singer and trades in his smooth vocals as the song suddenly veers off into a delightfully multi-layered sing along almost in the vein of Bodies of Water. To match the offbeat lyrics of "Pet Results (The Dog Who Talked Back)" that detail some very special lab animals, Loxsly swings between a more conventional melody and an experimental sound as things start to fall apart both lyrically and instrumentally.

With attention to both carefully proven, alt-rock convention and innovation, listening to Loxsly's upcoming album, Tomorrow's Fossils, is akin to pairing your favorite old hoodie with that hip new pair of skinny jeans — the combination is both comfortable and fresh.
