South Africa's New Military Leader

— Host Alex Chadwick talks with Phillip Van Niekirk, editor of the Weekly Mail and Guardian of Johannesburg, about the resignation of General George Meiring of South Africa. An apartheid-era officer, Meiring approved a false report about a supposed coup plot involving members of the ruling African National Congress to seize power during elections next year. The report alleged that Lieutenant-General Siphiwe Nyanda, assigned to be the first black leader of the country's military, was involved. A judicial commission concluded that there was no truth to the allegations.
