— NPR's Peter Kenyon reports on the opening of full Senate debate on the tobacco bill sponsored by Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott opened the debate last night with a procedural move that would eliminate the federal price supports that protect tobacco farmers. Southern Democrats reacted angrily, saying Senator Lott's move threatened bipartisan support for the bill.
