Nate To Recess

— NPR's Peter Kenyon reports that the Senate will leave for Memorial Day recess today without finishing work on the tobacco legislation. The bill, which is sponsored by Arizona Republican John McCain, suffered a setback yesterday when the Senate indicated their intent to remove all legal protections for the tobacco industry. Cigarette companies have already rejected the legislation and lawmakers speculate that if the bill does become law, it will face years of litigation.
