Banking Laws

— NPR's Kathleen Schalch reports on how the proposed merger between Citicorp and Travelers could affect efforts to change the nation's banking laws. Those laws, which date back to the Depression Era, place barriers between banks, brokerage houses, and insurance companies. An effort in Congress to lower those barriers failed to attract enough votes last week to change the law. If the Citicorp-Travelers merger goes forward, Congress may be forced to act after members return from their Spring recess.
