David Rakoff: Essayist, Mountaineer, 'Comic Saint'

David Rakoff and Chuck Coggins co-star in The Book of Liz, an Off Broadway play by David and Amy Sedaris.
David Rakoff, a regular contributor to public radio's This American Life, once spent a season as the Anti-Santa, posing as Sigmund Freud in the Barneys department-store window. He's a writer for Outside and The New York Times Magazine.
David Sedaris said that with his essay collection Fraud, Rakoff "manages to successfully pass himself off as the wittiest and most perceptive man in the world"; writer Paul Rudnick calls Rakoff "a comic saint... an ideal mix of the crabby and the debonair."
This interview originally aired on Jan. 14, 2001.
