— NPR's Nina Totenberg reports on testimony by Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louis Freeh before the House Government Reform Committee, concerning their disagreement over the need to appoint an independent counsel to investigate allegations of illegal campaign fundraising. Republican Committee Chairman Dan Burton of Indiana kept Attorney General Reno on the witness stand for six hours and FBI Director Freeh for another two hours before adjourning for the day. Neither would discuss the particulars of their disagreement nor hand over a memorandum detailing their differences. Each had praise for the integrity and fairness of the other.
