When it decides to scrap one of its ships, the U-S Navy hires one of several wrecking firms, scattered from Rhode Island, to North Carolina, to California. These companies are almost totally unregulated, and they try to make money by cutting as many corners as possible. They often ignore safety and environmental regulations, and many workers are seriously injured while on the job.
