First Union/Corestates Merger

— NPR's Elaine Korry reports First Union is buying Corestates for 16-billion dollars in the nation's largest bank merger. The plan must be approved by shareholders before it can take effect. The buyout has been rumored since last month and would create a string of 28-hundred branch offices from Florida to Connecticut.
