Freighters & Computers

— NPR's John McChesney visits the state of the art container shipping facility that American Presidents Line operates at Los Angeles harbor. Applying the latest computer controlled electronic technology, thousands of freight containers are loaded on and off oceanliners from the cab of a crane 170 feet above the dock. Computers calculate where and how the freight should be loaded to maximize hauling capacity aboard the ships. Multi-ton overseas shipments can be tracked almost as easily as domestic carriers track a parcel.
