Attorney General's Defense

— NPR's Chitra Ragavan reports on Attorney General Janet Reno's defense of the Justice Department investigation into Republican allegations that the Democrats engaged in illegal fundraising activities during last year's election campaign. The Attorney General told reporters yesterday that the evidence, so far, is not strong enough to justify requesting appointment of an independent counsel. At the same time, she expressed anger that the White House was not more forthright in turning over videotapes of receptions that President Clinton held at the White House for major contributors to the Democratic Party.
