Five years after releasing her 2004 solo debut, Happenstance, Rachael Yamagata is back in full force with a double-disc set, which pairs the quiet, contemplative Elephants with its more raucous, amplified counterpart, Teeth Sinking Into Heart.

After making a breakthrough Happenstance, the singer, pianist, songwriter and guitarist continues her musical evolution with Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart. For this Mountain Stage performance, Yamagata plays "Elephants" and "Sunday Afternoon" from the recent album's first side, "Faster" from the second, and "Be, Be Your Love" from Happenstance.

Joining Yamagata are Daniel Carlisle on bass, Christopher Giraldi on drums and Michael Chaves on keyboard and guitar. Mountain Stage pianist Bob Thompson also performs "Deep River" to pay tribute to the great Odetta, who died in December 2008.

This feature originally ran Apr. 7, 2009.
